MOST POPULAR IAF AIRCRAFTS

Fighter aircraft are used against external aggression by the Indian Air Force to ensure a safe and secure nation. Here are few of the technological marvels used by our Indian Airforce:

TEJAS/LIGHT COMBAT AIRCRAFT (LCA) FIGHTER AIRCRAFT – Manufactured by India


• Tejas is a lightweight aircraft developed by HAL i.e. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It was designed by DRDO i.e. Defense Research Development Organization. 

• Tejas was made to replace the Russian MIG 21 fighter airplane that was operated by Indian Air Force. 

• Tejas is a single engine multirole fighter jet. 

• Indian Air Force have 2 squadrons of Tejas located at Sulur, Tamil Nadu, as per 2020.

RAFALE FIGHTER AIRCRAFT – Manufactured by France

• Rafale is a twin-engine aircraft that is manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France. 

• According to a deal, Rafale jets will be operated by Indian Air Force as deal was signed for 36 Rafale Fighter Jets. The deal was signed in 2016, it includes a package of spares and weapons

• Apart from Indian Airforce, Rafale has been chosen by the Egyptian Air Force, Qatar Air Force.

• Rafale fighter jets were earlier used in combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Mali. 

SUKHOI 30 FIGHTER AIRCRAFT– Manufactured by Russia

• Manufactured by Sukhoi Aviation Corporation, Sukhoi 30 is a twin engine fighter jet. 

• Sukhoi 30 MkI is one of the varients that is used by the Indian Air Force. 

• Algeria, China, Vietnam, Venezuela, Malaysia are the other users of Sukhoi 30 other than India. 

• Sukhoi 30 MKI is the backbone of the Indian Air Force. As of January 2020, India operates around 260 Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter jets. India has plans to buy more Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft, primarily to replace the ones lost due to accidents.

MIRAGE-2000

 • Mirage-2000, also known as Vajra, is one of the best multi-role aircraft in the IAF. 

• Manufactured by Dassault Aviation in France, the aircraft was inducted in IAF in 1985 after Pakistan bought F-16 fighter planes from the US. 

• The Mirage-2000 played a key role in the 1999 Kargil war and this year’s Balakot air strike on the terror camp in Pakistan.

MIG - 29

• Also known as Hawk (Baaz),  MiG 29, after Su-30, forms the second line of defense. 

• Russia manufactured the MiG 29 in 1970s. Currently India is using the upgraded version of MiG 29, in fact the most advanced version. 

• It was used during the Kargil War to escort Mirage-2000 to the attack targets. 

MIG-21 BISON


• World’s first supersonic jet aircraft, Mig-21, is a single engine, single seater multirole fighter/ground attack aircraft of Russian origin.

• Played a major role in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. It is also described as the "backbone" of the IAF. 

• Recently, it made a lot of news after the jet downed a Pakistan Air Force’s F-16 plane in an air-to-air combat near LOC. India plans to replace the MiG21 Bison with the home-made Tejas LCA.
